Helping Hands Volunteer PDF E-mail

Description:

Opportunities are always available to join our Helping Hands work force. Currently, all projects take place in the Bankhead National Forest and may include trash pickup, removal of accumulated organic debris from sandstone glades, tree planting or trail maintenance. The third Saturday of every month is our usual Helping Hands work day, with occasional exceptions due to weather cancellations or scheduling conflicts. Mileage reimbursements are paid when volunteer vehicles are used for transportation to the work site or involved in the actual work, such has hauling off trash. Volunteers for these work days can expect to be in the good company of anywhere from 4 to 14 other dedicated Wild South supporters who love the Bankhead and want to make it a better place for all of us.

Candidate Background:

The ideal candidate for this position will be in average to good physical condition and enjoy getting out in the forest and performing hard physical work. No special skills are required, but if you are certified as a crosscut sawyer by the USFS or willing to take the training necessary for certification, that would be very helpful in our trail maintenance in the Sipsey Wilderness, where all work must be performed with hand tools to accommodate USFS regulations for wilderness areas. Candidate should enjoy working with others and having fun, too.

Supervisor and Location for the Project:

Helping Hands projects are supervised by Mark Kolinski and Janice Barrett. Work crews generally meet at the Wild South Alabama office at the Warrior Mountain Trading Post in Wren between 8 and 9 AM. Accommodations can be made to meet volunteers at the worksite as well. To join our Helping Hands work force, contact Janice at 256-974-6166 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
