Wild South presented six awards at their annual Green Tie Gala honoring the 2009 recipients of the Roosevelt-Ashe Society's Conservation Awards. "We are proud to continue the tradition of honoring the men, women, and local businesses whose contributions to outstanding environmental stewardship distinguish them as role models for the community," commented Ben Prater, Wild South Associate Director. The awards recognize individuals and businesses working on a wide range of environmental initiatives throughout the Southeast. The awards pay tribute to those who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence, leadership, and accomplishment in their respective fields. The award winners were selected by an independent panel of community leaders with one exception. The Wild South Board of Directors chooses the recipient of the Wild South Award of Distinction recognizing a significant contribution to Wild South's mission to protect and restore native ecosystems in the Southeast. The award winners were as follows:
The Wild South Award of Distinction: John Wilson-for his dedication and commitment to the effort to protect 25,500 acres of the Pisgah National Forest as the Grandfather National Scenic Area.
Outstanding Educator in Conservation: John Huie--for his years of service to environmental education through Outward Bound, the Warren Wilson College Environmental Leadership Center, and Muddy Sneakers.
Outstanding Volunteer in Conservation: Sherman Stambaugh--for his decades of work on the hiking trails of Western North Carolina as a 37-year member of the Carolina Mountain Club.
Outstanding Business in Conservation: The Marketplace Restaurant--for their commitment to sourcing local ingredients and supporting the conservation of family farms.

Outstanding Activist in Conservation: Lenny Kohm--for empowering thousands of people across the country to bring about positive change in order to protect the natural world and our natural heritage. "We feel honored to recognize these outstanding individuals and businesses.
