Collier Creek Hike Distance: 3 miles round trip Leader: Janice Barrett Rating: Challenging (for experienced hikers only) Ages 12 and over
Collier is one of the most wildly spectacular canyons and creeks in the Bankhead National Forest. Hikers who come here work for the privilege. Situated just outside of the community of Grayon, Collier Creek snakes it's way to Brushy Creek through a sandstone canyon shaded all the way by thick hemlock forest. The canyon is deep with steep sides that force hikers to be in the water much of the time. The rocky creekbed is slippery and challenges our sure-footedness and balance. This hike is completely off-trail; bush-whacking, some steep climbing, and many creek crossings will be required.
Caney Creek Falls Distance: 2 options: 2 miles round trip or 3.50 miles round trip (you can decide when you get there) Leaders: Julia and Joe Bright Rating: Moderately easy (the 2-mile option) to moderate (3.50 option) All ages
At the base of Caney Creek Falls is one of the best swimming holes in the forest. The waterfall is one of the most-photographed in Alabama and in the springtime is ringed by blooming mountain laurel. There is a sandy beach and cool, dark rock shelters. The hike to the waterfall is 1 mile. Those who want to go further will be led downsteam on Caney Creek to the lower falls. The hike from the upper to lower falls is about .75 mile and will follow the creek through beautiful Caney Creek canyon from the upper falls to the lower falls. Come prepared to swim, wade and hike! Wear hiking clothes that you can also swim in.

For both hikes: Bring a backpack lunch, snacks, plenty of drinking water. Be prepared for ticks and heat. A walking stick will be very useful on the Collier Creek hike. Footwear needs to be sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good tread for very slippery rocks. Meet-up: After This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it in advance (and sign up one must!), meet at 9:00 a.m. at Warrior Mountains Trading Company (11312 AL Hwy. 33, Moulton, AL). Park on the south end of the building and come into the store. Please park far away (as in nowhere near) from the diesel pump as this causes problems for big trucks. There will be sign-in sheets and a donation bucket on the table in the middle of the store. This is where we will gather at 9:00 (it's a good idea to get there a few minutes before) and discuss. Wild South hikes are free, but your donation will be gratefully accepted! All hikers' donations go directly to support our work in the Bankhead National Forest. Thank you!
