Saturday, February 6, 2010 9:30 a.m. All ages and donations are welcome In winter, the bone-structure of a landscape becomes visible, making it a perfect time to explore the geology of a place. On February 6, Dr. Jim Lacefield and Wild South staff will lead a two-part hike in the Bankhead National Forest to places of geological interest. Sandstone bluffs and canyons, limestone glades and fossils are some of the features that will be explored. Dr. Lacefield will read the stories in the rocks and explain theories of how this beautiful part of our Warrior Mountains came to be. Dr. Lacefield is retired from the University of North Alabama as a professor of Earth Sciences and is is the author of Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks. He and his wife, Faye, own Cane Creek Preserve in Colbert County, Alabama. After This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company in Wren, Alabama (11312 AL Hwy 33, Moulton, AL) no later than 9:30 a.m. Park on the south side of the building, come into the store. At 9:30 we will gather at the tables in the center of the store and have a little chat before we carpool to our first site. Bring backpack lunch, snacks, drinking water. You may also want a walking stick, camera, notebook and pen. Wear clothes comfortable for hiking and layered for warmth. Shoes need to be sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good, heavy tread for slippery, steep terrain. Wool socks are recommended.
