About Wild South

          Wild South is a grassroots forest protection organization whose mission is to inspire individuals and groups to preserve, restore and enjoy the South's natural landscapes.  It is in these places that we find the links to our ancestors and our past, and where we can preserve outdoor opportunities for our children and generations to come.

          We started as the Bankhead Monitor in 1991, then became Wild Alabama, and now Wild South.  With over 1,100 members and a magazine distribution of 5,000, we have gained national recognition as a leader in forest protection.   Politics, greed and big business conspire to take our trees from our forests and leave environmental damage in its wake. Wild South’s vision is to help protect and preserve our public forests for nondestructive use by the people who own them and the wildlife that has a rightful place in them.   
         Through our efforts with WildLaw, we have protected over 305,000 acres of public land from abuse in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.  We have worked closely with the Echota Cherokee Tribe to gain protection of their traditional cultural properties and historic districts on public lands.

      Since our inception, we have worked to have the national forests managed for the benefit of the public rather than for the profit of a few timber companies and paper mills.   For the past nine years we have served on the Liaison Panel which provides advise for the Land and Resource Management Plan  and the Health and Restoration Project for Alabama's Bankhead National Forest. This project will gradually replace all of the 79,000 acres of planted loblolly pine plantations of the Bankhead with natural forest communities.  Some areas will be restored to more open hardwood or pine woodlands through controlled burning.  This will provide more diversity of plants and habitat for wildlife, particularly songbirds, quail, deer and turkey.

     In Alabama, we have the first and only plan in the country that calls for restoration of natural forest ecosystems throughout the national forests, and we are proud to lead the way. 
      
      In 2004, we convinced the USFS to define a new canyon prescription, and we are currently mapping the canyons for the USFS.    We expect that the new delineations will protect an additional 10,000 acres of the Bankhead as de facto wilderness, which contain most of the old growth trees of the Forest.

       We are supported by our members, generous benefactors, and donor organizations that share our vision to create and preserve a better world by managing public lands for enjoyment by the public and wildlife.
